Why is Goal Setting Important?
The act of goal setting is a process that begins with clearly defining what is important to you. It is much more than SMART goals or simply writing down a “to do” list on paper. Goal setting is a character development life skills that helps you look into the future. It allows you to decide on a goal, develop a specific plan of action and gives you a target date for completion.
Goal setting is not a stagnant event. Once you decide on a goal there is much more to do. Let’s face it goal setting is not always. If it were, more people would be doing it. Setting and achieving goals is extremely rewarding.
Goal setting helps students define their growth and development needs. Setting and achieving goals gives them a direction and a sense of accomplishment. They show students areas that need some additional attention and effort. Goal setting helps successful people set their priorities. Successful people know that it is important to help others. Goal setting helps students plan for their future and it is a fundamental building block for their success. Goals help students develop a more positive attitude about school, themselves and the world around them, and how they fit in. They help students define which adults and peers can help them achieve their goals.
Goal setting, strong character development traits (i.e. honesty, determination, fairness, etc.) and educational ownership are fundamental building blocks students need to succeed in school and in life. When these are combined with your love and attention, your teen will have a strong foundation to build upon for their future success.
