Minimize the Hassles over Homework
Fran Larson of Palm Harbor, Florida shares this idea:
In Fran’s home she rewards her children for doing their homework. Her children get a reward if they do their the homework for the entire week without having to be reminded repeatedly about it.
Fran writes down several rewards on separate pieces of paper, folds them, and puts them in a fish bowl. Her children can “fish” for their reward if they have taken responsibility for their homework.
Her rewards have included baking their favorite cookies or cooking their favorite dish, getting an ice cream sundae, and, going to the park, etc. The key is that the homework has to be done correctly and without reminders in order to have the opportunity to “fish” for their reward.
Thanks, Fran, for sharing. Fran Larsoen Fan Larsen is the author of “Character Keys to a Bright Future.” Do you have a successful parenting idea you would like to share with others?
Suggestions for implementation:
- Decide on five to ten rewards that will motivate your children to take more responsibility for their home homework.
- Set the rules for when they can fish for their rewards.
- Set a specific time each week for the fishing, and make it a positive experience for your children.
- Fran reports that this same idea is good for getting her children to do some of the household chores.
Quote for discussion:
