Excuses, Excuses, Excuses

The world is full of people who make excuses.  Excuses shift the blame to someone or something else, and if you let them, they can be roadblocks in your path to success.

Life presents us with new and sometimes difficult tasks.  Don’t let excuses hold you back from reaching your full potential.  When the door is closed, find the open window.

Do you know people who make excuses for not handing in their homework on time or for not doing well in a class?  For example, “I would have handed in my homework, but I left it at home.”  Or, Miranda always gets good grades because she is the teacher’s pet, when really she works very hard for the good grades.  Don’t let excuses be a roadblock to your success.

Fast forward several years and you are now working at a job that pays you $30,000 per year. Your boss comes in and says he needs your report on his desk in the morning.  Are you going to work the next day and tell him “I left the report at home?”  How do you think your boss will respond?

To make your goals become a reality it is very important to eliminate excuses.  Substitute your imagination, your desire, and your determination to succeed.  Spend your time on making it happen rather than finding an excuse for why you didn’t.

Suggestions for implementation:

  1. For the next three days, write down each excuse you use.
  2. Review the excuses that you wrote down.  Is there a pattern?
  3. Discuss with your family members what you have learned from this exercise.

Questions for discussion

  1. Think about today’s activities. Did you make any excuses for a lack of effort on your part?
  2. How can you minimize excuses in the future?

Quote for discussion:

“Every path has a puddle.”    English proverb
